How To Jump Start Your Goals

Can we all just agree that January through March were just trial months and 2019 starts now? Great, thanks.

I know I’m not the only one who thinks the first few months of this year have FLOWN by. The older we get the quicker time goes by because of how increasingly busy we are. But, if we’re not careful, we can become too caught up in the day to day and forget about the long term. For those of you who are like me and a little delayed in your goal setting for the year – fear not- it’s better late than never.

One of my favorite goal setting tools is vision boards. Visualizing my goals helps me remember what it is I want to achieve and keeps me on track. I also find it to be a relaxing activity because sometimes life is hard and crafting like I’m in the 3rd grade again is good stress relief.

So, ready to start your vision board? Here is what you will need:

  • Magazines
  • Glue
  • Poster board or construction paper

To start making a vision board what I like to do is have a list in mind of things that I’m looking for. For example this year something that I want to work on is healthier habits. I looked for pictures of healthy foods, people exercising, and so on. My husband made a vision board also, and since we would like to take a trip this year, he put a picture of a beach. Other pictures I used are just random skies that I think are pretty and flowers to balance it out and fill in blank spaces. The beauty of this is that it can be whatever you want. Then, just hang it up – preferably somewhere you will see it everyday. When you’re getting up every morning going to work or going through your daily tasks and not feeling motivated, remembering your “why” can help you put things back into perspective.

From my personal experience with vision boards, I looked back at the end of the year and saw that the majority of what I set out to do I had actually done! One big thing was going back to school a few years ago. Not only did I get my degree but I also made the Dean’s List (which wasn’t in my plans, believe me, I was just trying to finish!). I was constantly seeing what I was working towards so day by day I was taking steps to get there. Did I do everything that was on my board that year? No. Some things may not work out but we have to give ourselves grace. Don’t be discouraged, just look at what can be improved on and be proud of yourself for what you were able to do.
